Music seen at SPACE Gallery, October 24, 2007

I was working across the street from SPACE Gallery the night of the jdwalker/Alias/Astronautalis show. I managed to shirk my responsibilities long enough to steal away to catch someone, anyone, playing.
Lucky for me, I got there early enough to catch jdwalker. The salt-of-the-earth MC has been dropping earnest science with ever-rarer live appearances since the release of 2005’s Them Get You Them Got You.
I bounced around the crowd, attempting a break for the bathroom with a strength of resolve not to be thwarted, but I stopped short next to the stage to find jdwalker sitting in a chair clutching a guitar like an old bluesman — singing like one too. The piano-wire-veins in his neck were bugging out like his head was going to take off above the audience like a popped balloon.
With live beats by Ric Loyd (drummer for Ruler of the Raging Main), Brzowski on bass (remarkably at home with it) along with former Black Apple Bill Butler on guitar, there was an entirely new sound to old songs and a move toward what we can only hope is an entirely new batch of jdwalker songs bringing his modest but powerfully delivered insights to the table.
Then I remembered I was headed to the bathroom. Basically what I’m trying to say is jdwalker almost made me piss my pants.
