Music Seen, the Big Easy, June 3, 2007

While most of us pray for the Old Port Festival to start our summer season with a sizzle, the wet weather, for the fourth time in five years, made it more like a fizzle. But, despite appearances, summer is truly upon us because singer Lyle Divinsky has returned home to Portland.
For the past few sunny seasons, L.Div has been trekking back to Maine from his academic pursuits to entertain audiences ranging from young girls (he’s a handsome guy) to older folks who were buying music when a lot of his classic covers were originally released.
Lyle doesn’t front: he sings soul and R&B, and that’s that. There are no tags or modifiers needed: his music is pure and honest. His focus is so spectacular that his originals sound like instant classics that might have had a life on 45s and crackly AM radio for decades.
At this set, the 2 pm tee-off for the Big Easy’s OPFestivities, he was flanked by a band comprised of old buddies and members of the ToneKings, including his pop, Phil Divinsky. What happens from here is just spectacular. These guys are like butter on the biscuit of the audiences’ soul, and each person there eats it right up.
This summer, he has relocated his weekly residency from the dearly departed Chicky’s to the Big Easy, sharing every Thursday night with the Waxmen. Go there and see him. It will become your favorite summer thang.
