DJ Food
Six years ago, DJ Food and DK kick-started Ninja Tune’s “Solid Steel” series with
Now, Listen
. That mix was so good that it’s drawn comparisons with Coldcut’s seminal
70 Minutes of Madness
. So the sequel has a lot to live up to, and though it can’t be accorded classic status just yet,
Now, Listen Again!
is an invigorating set encompassing a wide range of pop from the past three decades. New Order bump up against Aphex Twin, Rakim rides a Human League beat, “Purple Haze” is given Northern Soul treatment, and a little-known psych classic by the Dragons takes the album to the end. You’d be hard-pressed to find such proficient and seemingly effortless mixing. Some average tracks and too many cutesy spoken-word samples keep this from matching the achievement of its older brother. But, given today’s hyper-trendy mix climate, it’s still a must-have.

Bibio | Ambivalence Avenue
Since this new record by Wolverhampton's Stephen James Wilkinson (a/k/a Bibio) has done nothing but delight me, I'm going to honor the sentiments posted to his MySpace blog and spare him the f-word and all variants thereof.
M83
M83 do something unexpected on Digital Shades, Vol. 1 , diving headlong into ambient music.
The Tuss
Things often are not as they seem — then again, often they are.
Vocal musings
“My voice is a bit like a piano with a dodgy key on it or something,” Beth Orton chuckles quietly over the phone as her tour bus rumbles toward the Canadian border.

Somebody to shove
We Push Buttons have become the crack dealers of the local electronic music scene.
Ellen Allien
When Ellen Allien ponders listlessly on Sool’s Web site, “What does minimal mean for me? Minimal is just there,” the red flags go a-flying.
Various Artists: Accepted: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
The Pixies kick things off with, appropriately, “U-Mass,” and an A-list of alterna-indie artists (Modest Mouse, Le Tigre, Weezer, Ryan Adams, the Chemical Brothers with Beth Orton) all provide top-notch if familiar cuts.
Gas
Kompakt label head Wolfgang Voigt re-releases the four discs of his Gas project — long hailed as some of the best albums in ambient techno — along with a double LP of extended material.
Party pros
Weekend Warriors, or WKND WRYRZ, is the Sunday-night lounge party at ZuZu in Central Square.
The Field
Not since Akufen’s “My Way” has an album of microsamples achieved the status of high art.

Underground Kingz is not quite an instant classic, but it would be hard to deny that UGK have reclaimed their throne.

All it took was a Godzilla sample and a simple, forceful “Simon says get the fuck up” for Pharoahe Monch to leave his mark on hip-hop history.
