Stars
By the ripe old age of 20, Blaine Larsen had graduated from his Tacoma (Washington) high school and released two full-length country albums. The latest has him carrying on his Music Row forefathers’ habit of never letting a year pass without putting out an album or three. And like those forefathers, he’s a stone-cold pro, as Rockin’ You Tonight makes clear. Equipped with a silky baritone, guitar skills, and a deft sense of humor, he can elevate even suspect material. The highlight here is his searing cover of Mac Davis’s 1972 hit “Baby Don’t Get Hooked on Me,” a song about an older man pushing away a “hot-blooded woman child”; given his own age, it’s a nice choice. Sure, like most Nashville records, this one has filler stuffed in among the keepers. You can count on more of both when, surely, another Larsen album arrives later this year.

Brad Paisley
Paisley’s winsome 5th Gear is about as light as Miranda Lambert’s Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is dark — in a good way.
Music Seen: Neko Case + Haru Bangs
First things first: Neko Case is the complete package, an unmitigated bombshell (gorgeous, wry, self-effacing) with a singular artistic vision (country/folk songs so heavy on metaphor and animistic and obscure mythological references that you could — and should — unpack them for months) and a voice like an air-raid siren.

Jason Aldean is a young, earring-wearing hat act who plays the Nashville game the way it’s always been played.

This is Steve Earle’s big hug to his new home town, New York City, and his new wife (his seventh), country singer Allison Moorer.
Watson Twins
The Watson Twins are Chandra and Leigh, two Kentucky-raised, LA-based sisters who’ve spent the past year doing a heck of a job singing back-up in Rilo Kiley frontwoman Jenny Lewis’s country-pop solo act.
