Forgetting Sarah Marshall
A limp comedic effort

Forgetting Sarah Marshall
Judd Apatow gave the dick joke a shot of Viagra in
Knocked Up
and
Superbad
. Here, as producer, he takes it one stroke farther as writer/star Jason Segel (he was one of the screw-offs in
Knocked Up
) keeps flogging his log for the camera — and I’m not sure why. The comic effect goes limp fast and has little to do with the effort of Segel’s Pete to win back the girlfriend of the title (Kristen Bell). She’s the renowned star of a
CSI
-like crime show and he’s the lowly composer. Over-rigged coincidences deliver the estranged couple separately to the same Hawaiian resort where Apatow regular Jonah Hill toils as a crass maître d’ and Paul Rudd poses as a stoned surfer dude. The film does show some heart when Pete falls for the sassy front-desk receptionist (Mila Kunis) and Russell Brand delivers a droll parody of a sober, free-loving pop star, but at nearly two hours, director Nicholas Stoller just can’t keep it up.

Mother of convention
Having laughed more at The 40-Year-Old Virgin than at any other film in 2005, I expected much the same from Judd Apatow’s Knocked Up .

What if Terms of Endearment had had more dick jokes?
Zack and Miri Make a Porno
Kevin Smith’s ear for raunch is as piquant as ever, but he’s moved beyond his usual unconvincing leads to Judd Apatow regulars Rogen and Craig Robinson.
After The Daytrippers . . .
Greg Mottola didn't make a film for 11 years after his 1997 debut feature, The Daytrippers, caused a small ripple in the indie world.
Dirty politics
The last resort of the true patriot is a fart joke.
Interview: Judd Apatow
Behind every successful comedian, there's . . . a personal assistant. Who, given how egomaniacal and utterly misanthropic the funnyman in question is, is probably his best friend, too.
Cinema of Shadows
It’s not likely, but Judd Apatow’s pitch for Knocked Up might have sounded something like this.
Comic relief
I know it hasn’t escaped you how terrible comedies have gotten.
Review: Year One
Mel Brooks and the lads from Monty Python stormed through this territory with fierce farce. Here there's little farce, just a fusillade of flaccid dick jokes.
Rock and roles
A good number of the jokes in Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story are available for your amusement right now, well ahead of the film’s December 21 theatrical-release date.
Wise asses
With all the star power being trotted out in this summer’s would-be blockbuster comedies, how likely was it that the best would be Superbad ?

The latest dark comedy from Bobcat Goldthwait tackles both vapid celebrity culture ( i.e. , Paris Hilton, the Kardashians, and American Idol ) and the indignity of being an office drone.

Peter Lord, animator behind claymation staples Wallace & Gromit and Chicken Run , directs this very British, very dry romp on the high seas during the time when Britannia did indeed rule the waves.

Dan Lindsay and T. J. Martin's Oscar-winning documentary about an underequipped high-school football team competing against big-time programs across Tennessee offers a potent contemplation on race and opportunity.
REVIEW: DR. SEUSS' THE LORAX
| March 01, 2012
Regrettably, this team loses a lot of Seuss's quirkiness, though not the message about corporate greed and slash-and-burn imperialism.
