Big screen fairy tale

The Forbidden Kingdom
Hong Kong action stars Jackie Chan and Jet Li don’t stray too far from type in this big-screen fairy tale: Chan plays a drunken kung fu master and Li’s a stoic monk with lethal reflexes. What’s a stretch is the film’s “Boston” setting (
Forbidden
clearly was not shot in our fair city) and the Southie ruffians blessed with Brooklyn accents. The dweebish Jason (Michael Angarano) finds himself caught between bullies and a kindly old Chinese shop owner. Before you can say Karate Kid, Jason is transported through time to ancient China to get schooled by Chan and Li and deliver a golden staff to a Monkey King so he can battle an evil warlord. It’s total hooey, but slick-looking hooey. Director Rob Minkoff has Ang Lee and Zhang Yimou aspirations that never quite take flight, but he does have action choreographer Woo-Ping Yuen (
The Matrix
and
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
) on tap to bolster the illusion.

So much blood splashes across the screen in James McTeigue’s martial-arts madness, you’d think the human body consisted of nothing but.

Review: Just Wright
As glossy as you might expect, the film double-dribbles with its familiar story of the ugly duckling who wins the swan.

Most know about the rise of LeBron James from impoverished Ohio roots (fatherless and raised in public housing) to mega-millionaire and NBA phenom, so why make a documentary?
Review: Tooth Fairy
Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson dons a pink tutu and wings as Derek, a hockey player who's earned the nickname "The Tooth Fairy" for his knack for knocking out opposing players' bicuspids on the ice.
Review: Crazy Heart
Every great actor has at least one washed-up, alcoholic, award-winning-country-singer role in him. For Jeff Bridges, it's "Bad" Blake, a former C&W legend now reduced to playing bowling alleys and dive bars in tiny towns in the Southwest.
Review: Armored
In view of its credentials, Armored should be a lay-up.

Dan Lindsay and T. J. Martin's Oscar-winning documentary about an underequipped high-school football team competing against big-time programs across Tennessee offers a potent contemplation on race and opportunity.

Regrettably, this team loses a lot of Seuss's quirkiness, though not the message about corporate greed and slash-and-burn imperialism.
