LOSERS: But which one will win the poker game?
Zak Penn shifts his mock-documentary focus from the cryptozoology of
Incident at Loch Ness
to the equally strange denizens of the world of professional poker.
The Grand
follows six players who reach the final table in a high-stakes tournament, throwing in not-so-supportive spouses, costumed opponents, and overzealous commentators. The eclectic ensemble includes narrator Woody Harrelson and comedic vets Ray Romano, David Cross, and Cheryl Hines; there’s also an enigmatic performance by director Werner Herzog. Glimpses into the private lives of these poker fanatics are painfully funny, with Penn’s humor alternately subtle and over-the-top.
The Grand
starts to unhinge as more characters are introduced, Penn trying to save it with Christopher Guest-like finale. Yet having followed this band of winners and losers as they sort out their cards and their problems, you may just find yourself caring who wins in the final showdown.

War zones
The party’s over. Time for the lessons to begin.
The Funn(k)y Drummer
Johnny Carson was revered for his impeccable comic timing. It was "so precise," wrote one newspaper in his obituary, "that we wouldn't be surprised to find buried in his skull a quartz crystal." And why might that be? Perhaps because Johnny Carson was a drummer. In drumming, after all, timing is everything.
The Namesake
Many local fans of Jhumpa Lahiri’s novel The Namesake especially enjoyed the details of its Cambridge setting.
Confetti
British theater veteran Debbie Isitt’s mock-documentary follows three couples in the title bridal magazine’s contest for the “Most Original Wedding of the Year,” the prize being a million-dollar dream home . Watch the trailer for Confetti (QuickTime)
Review: Management
With a tip of the name badge to Norman Bates, a mama's boy of a motel manager hooks up with an emotionally stunted executive for a romance that's stiffer than a Radisson bedspread.
Righteous brother
We like to imagine that somewhere there exists an Elks-Club-like organization of the slightly-less-famous brothers of celebrities.
Mister Lonely
Harmony Korine aspires to the weird and revelatory but too often achieves the merely creepy.
Rock and roles
Late March, 2005, Allston: Ironlung is in the parking lot of Mad Oak Studios, a large man stranded in the midafternoon, wearing flip-flops, standing in a desert of cigarette butts, asphalt, despair.
Stand-up guys
“In the sphere of thought, absurdity and perversity remain the masters of the world,” wrote Schopenhauer, “and their dominion is suspended only for brief periods.”
Funny business
"I'm pasty, pale, overweight and I have red hair. I see that Coldstone Creamery and I want to crawl inside and hide," Louis C.K. responded when I asked if he recalled just how disgustingly hot and muggy Rhode Island could be during his 4th of July headlining set at the Newport Yachting Center.
Review: Zombieland
Does it mean anything that Jesse Eisenberg's follow-up to Adventureland is Zombieland and that it also includes a theme park?

Paul Weiland’s Made of Honor is not your usual formulaic romantic comedy: it’s stupid, its leading man is unlikable, and its jokes are unfunny and sometimes cruel.
