The Ten
Hallelujah the hodgepodge

THE TEN: Winona Ryder gets her, uh, man.
Although Krzysztof Kieslowski’s
Decalogue
remains the best cinematic reimagining of the Ten Commandments, Ken Marino & David Wain’s
The Ten
may be the most irreverent. (What else is there,
Wholly Moses!
?) A hodgepodge of 10 skits, one for each law, hosted by a smug Paul Rudd, it resembles comedic groundbreakers like
The Kentucky Fried Movie
and
The Groove Tube
. And, true to its roots, the film pumps the redoubtable ensemble through the gonzo wringer. Winona Ryder, for example, plays a newlywed who gets sexually liberated by a dummy (the wooden kind). Rudd’s poor announcer struggles to choose between Famke Janssen and Jessica Alba. (We all should be that unfortunate.) Most devilish of all is the “Thou Shall Not Covet Thy Neighbor’s Wife” yarn: a screwball doctor (Marino) botches a surgery as a gag, ends up incarcerated, and in a brutal twist becomes the jailhouse bitch. Hallelujah.

Review: I Love You, Man
I Love You, Man starts up where He's Just Not into You left off, with some poor emasculated bastard being sacrificed to some clinging, needy, borderline psychotic bitch at the altar.

Review: Year One
Mel Brooks and the lads from Monty Python stormed through this territory with fierce farce. Here there's little farce, just a fusillade of flaccid dick jokes.

Hope springs infernal
Given the current economic climate, spring this year is a season more of dread than of hope for change.

Politics as usual?
Conspiracy, corruption, catastrophe — politics and world events sure can be exciting. Even the mainstream news is taking an interest.

The latest dark comedy from Bobcat Goldthwait tackles both vapid celebrity culture ( i.e. , Paris Hilton, the Kardashians, and American Idol ) and the indignity of being an office drone.

Peter Lord, animator behind claymation staples Wallace & Gromit and Chicken Run , directs this very British, very dry romp on the high seas during the time when Britannia did indeed rule the waves.

REVIEW: UNDEFEATED
| March 15, 2012
Dan Lindsay and T. J. Martin's Oscar-winning documentary about an underequipped high-school football team competing against big-time programs across Tennessee offers a potent contemplation on race and opportunity.
REVIEW: DR. SEUSS' THE LORAX
| March 01, 2012
Regrettably, this team loses a lot of Seuss's quirkiness, though not the message about corporate greed and slash-and-burn imperialism.
