Pathfinder
.
The sexual tension and transcendental tones of Terrence Malick’s
The New World
and the graphic, balletic carnage of
300
meet uncomfortably in Marcus (
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
remake) Nispel’s
Pathfinder
. A loose retooling of Norwegian director Nils Gaup’s 1988 Oscar-nominated
Ofelas
, it’s set during the Viking conquest of North America, 500 years before Columbus. As this version has it, the Vikings are ruthless marauders driven by bloodlust and greed and the natives are slaughter fodder for their cold steel. After one invasion, a Norse boy is left behind and taken in by the “savages.” Fifteen years later, more ships come and Ghost (Karl Urban, the relentless baddie in
The Bourne Supremacy
) must fight his Nordic kin to save his adopted family. Nispel tosses continuity to the wind, and Urban doesn’t fill the big role, though the action sequences are impressive. The Conan-esque garb of the Norsemen adds flair, and the lovely Moon Bloodgood injects brio as Starfire, the can-do love interest.

Where is the love?
Within a couple months of its release, Brokeback Mountain went from being simply a well-made, serious film to a widely recognized, highly satirized cultural artifact.
Tristan & Isolde
Everything you expect from a mainstream adaptation of an ancient legend is here: grand vistas, mist and blood, brooding romantic score, PG-rated nude lovemaking.
Baldacci’s ‘political prisoner’
John Baldacci’s administration on November 13 sent the Maine State Prison’s chief human-rights advocate, inmate Deane Brown, to a dangerous prison more than 500 miles away, in Baltimore. Brown’s lawyer and his best friend believe this decision was in retaliation for his activism, and puts his life in danger.
Indian fossils have love session lasting 65 million years

The long wait for gay marriage
Justice Brown-Duso is an outspoken nine-year-old with a big smile.
Getting hitched
It's a show that stretches from va-va-voom to the solemn roots of marriage in our culture. And maybe says a bit about — if I dare be so grand — the magical, irresistible force of love.
Teen scenes
The show fills this summer’s void of outdoor theater with a light and gleeful touch.
Craig's list
This week, Sara Evans dropped out of the top-rated Dancing with the Stars , alleging that her soon-to-be-ex husband is a pervy, porn-hording adulterer. Somewhere, White House flacks may have felt they dodged a bullet.

REVIEW: JOYFUL NOISE
| January 10, 2012
There's not much joy but there's plenty of noise of the rafter-rocking gospel singing variety in Tony Graff's musical dramedy.

REVIEW: TRESPASS

If Rod Lurie's errant remake of Straw Dogs didn't tickle your morbid fear of home invasion, then perhaps the latest from Joel Schumacher ( Falling Down ) might do the job.
