"Cover to Cover," live album cover night: Dray Senior performs Jay-Z's Reasonable Doubt, with original set
GOING BEYOND | Tickets to see the irrepressible pop band MGMT at the State sold out long ago; if you don’t have one, you might be stuck with a garden variety Tuesday night. Thing is, that’s not much of a problem in Portland. The Big Easy holds its weekly Cover to Cover event, and while that can be generally hit or miss (depending largely on taste), it’s handled tonight by the prolific rapper DRAY SENIOR — a Portlander by way of Jersey — who revives Jay-Z’s game-changing 1996 debut Reasonable Doubt at 9. $5 at 55 Market St., 207.775.2266. At precisely the same time, another in-town institution gets under way down the street: DJ PONYFARM, winner of the Best Karaoke handle at this year’s Best of Portland awards, revs up the clapping machine and heats up the mic at Slainte, 24 Preble St. 207.828.0900.
