A Couple of Blaguards
ROGUES GALLERY | AIRE, Portland’s fixture of Irish theater, opens the unique two-character comedy A COUPLE OF BLAGUARDS this weekend. Written by the Irish-American brothers Frank and Malachy McCourt, Blaguards, by all reports, is a sharp-tongued and witty chronicle of the two brothers’ impoverished youth and emigration to the States. It should testify to the writing that the McCourts, of course, each made their names in the literary world (Frank with the Pulitzer Prize-winning Angela’s Ashes and Malachy with the memoir A Monk Swimming, before a bid as the New York state Green Party gubernatorial candidate). This one’s sure to be a romp, and appears to be absent some of the gauche sentimentality that can sometimes turn up in plays of this ilk. Performed by seasoned actors Tony Reilly and Paul Haley and running through April 7th at Portland Stage’s Studio Theater, 25A Forest Ave. 7:30 pm, $18-20. 207.799.5327.
