"Hi Haters!: The Metaphor of Microfame & Social Media Use as a Structure of Feeling"
LIKE THIS | Rob Horning, writer and editor of the cultural theory mag The New Inquiry, appears at USM to broach the difficult and highly nuanced subject of “microfame,” a term he uses for the self-affirming glow we get from successfully managing our cyber-identities. As online maintenance becomes increasingly compulsory — in some cases mandatory — Horning’s argues that social media is completely rewiring our sense of community and definition of social risk. His lecture, titled “HI HATERS!: THE METAPHOR OF MICROFAME AND SOCIAL MEDIA USE AS A STRUCTURE OF FEELING” and sponsored by the Philosophy Symposium, should be a popular one at the Portland campus’s Talbot Lecture Hall. 3:30 pm, free.
