Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo
REVERBERATING GROWL | Do you like Robin Williams? That was one of the central questions to arise from the original staging of Rajiv Joseph’s BENGAL TIGER IN THE BAGHDAD ZOO in 2009. Williams played the tiger, an obviously loaded role, which was considered a necessary inducement to get Broadway audiences to see an overtly political production. It worked; Joseph’s play was largely viewed as a hit (the Los Angeles Times called it “the most original drama written about the Iraq War”), and now it is widely produced in off-off-off circuits. Mad Horse Theater Company opens it this weekend, with venerable actor Tootie Van Reenen in the title role, at 24 Mosher St. in South Portland. Tickets cost $20-22; Thursdays pay-what-you-can. 7:30 pm (2 pm Sundays). 207.730.2389.
