The Children’s Museum and Theatre of Maine opens WILEY AND THE HAIRY MAN this weekend, playing at 2 and 4:30 today. This one digs a little deeper than their fairytale traditionals: it’s based on an old Creole folktale about a young boy and his mother, who battle a villain (the hairy man, obv) to determine who is the best conjurer in the country. Wiley breaches the topic of magic in a way that’s different from most kids’ fairytales, which generally tend to bind it to heroism and transcendental genius and stuff like that. Written in the 1930s as part of the New Deal Federal Writers Project, Wiley is performed by both children and adults alike. $9 at 142 Free St. 207.828.1234.
