"Guyland: the Perilous World Where Boys Become Men"
In the burgeoning field of masculinity studies, MICHAEL KIMMEL has received some strapping accolades from national critics and academics. His latest book, Guyland: the Perilous World Where Boys Become Men, muses on the modern social condition of the latest generation of post-collegiate adult males, whose task, Kimmel posits, is to ceaselessly perform a series of vapid, self-affirming rituals and demonstrations for one another. Or as a writer for the New York Times Book Review puts it, “to demonstrate, constantly and repeatedly, that (they’re) not gay.” Kimmel’s been hammering at this issue for a while — his history of pro-feminist men in the US (1992’s Against the Tide) was widely acclaimed — and has been one of the key voices bringing this controversial topic into mainstream sociology. He speaks on his book and work at 7 pm in Bowdoin’s Kresge Auditorium, 3900 College Station, Brunswick. Free, call 207.725.3375.
