Also on display are the candy-coated sheet-metal manipulations of sculptor and word artist Cliff Baldwin. The New York-based veteran has lined two of the walls of Whitney Art Works with super-sized replicas of discarded fast food wrappers. Each item of the rainbow assortment features the phrase “BURGERED SHAKEDAND FRIED” in a bemused commentary on one of our society’s biggest bad habits that won’t seem to go away.
Also flying the McDonald’s colors is a very unique and contemporary take on the “Orchestrion,” a mechanical instrument invented in 1851 to replicate an orchestra. The user/viewer presses delectable-looking marshmallow buttons to hear pieces of music with each instrument dedicated to one of six surround-sound speakers. The result is moderately immersive and definitely fun. See it to believe it.
